Wildlife Species In Humboldt County

Bats

There are over a thousand different species of bats around the world. Bats are frequently found in attics, where they will roost during the day and leave to feed on bugs at night.

Bats range in size from 2 1/4 to 7 1/2 inches long, with a wingspan of 6 to 15 inches. Their bodies are hairy and range in color from tan to black. Their ears are also proportionately large for their head.

Known for carrying diseases, any bats living in the attic are harmful to humans. Their droppings will cause structural damage to a building. However, Bats can be beneficial on the outside of home, working to reduce the overall mosquito population.

Squirrels

Wildlife Species - Squirrels

Tree squirrels are commonly seen in the woods, but will sometimes invade nearby homes. They feed on nuts, berries, flowers, bark, eggs, and even baby birds.

The teeth of a squirrel never stop growing. As a result, they will constantly gnaw on surfaces to keep their teeth worn down. Squirrels around the home can cause damage to wiring, plumbing, and ducting with their constant chewing.

Raccoons

Raccoons will eat just about anything, making them a nuisance around homes. They will often leave a mess behind after raiding garbage cans. Raccoons are known to live in holes, trees, fallen logs, attics, and crawl spaces of homes.

Female raccoons can have 1 to 7 babies each year! Most of that activity will be in the early summer. Even one raccoon on your property is too many. If left to their own devices, raccoons can damage the insulation of a home by nesting and contaminating it with feces.

Skunks

Wildlife Species - Skunks

Skunks eat a wide variety of food from insects, reptiles, rodents, plants, and fish. They are omnivores, so like raccoons they will eat just about anything.

Skunks come equipped with an impressive defense mechanism. They can project an oily liquid from glands under the tail. The spray can shoot up to 10 feet! This is a very effective defense technique, however, when used under homes the bad smell can last for quite some time. If your dog happened to be sprayed by a skunk, the humane society has some tips on what to do.

Birds

Pigeons (Rock Doves) are approximately 13 inches long and vary in color from white to almost black. They can live anywhere between 4 and 12 years.

Pigeons are the most serious bird pest that will invade buildings. They are very resourceful in urban areas, feeding on garbage, vegetable matter, spillage, insects, and handouts from humans. Their acidic droppings can cause damage to the paint of buildings, vehicles, and equipment. Pigeon droppings spread numerous diseases, including Histoplasmosis. They may even have parasitic mites living on them, which could journey off and spread more disease to humans through their bites.
